Hi!!
I hope everyone checked out the Blog in November. It was our best month yet!! We had 5 submissions alone in November, not to mention our Stream Team excursion. As of now, our bake sale has been postponed until the new year and due to weather, we will not be able to pick up stream team again until the temperatures reliably move above freezing. If you have any ideas for events in the meanwhile (we might do a movie night or something similar) please let me know. If you have anything you would like published on the blog, please send it my way.
Other than that Happy Holidays and I look forward to Slingshot in 2010!

Today I received our care package/ thank you gifts from the Missouri Department of Conservation for our first two Stream Team Efforts. We now have 8 pairs of gloves, 15 t-shirts, and a first aid kit! So, we are ready to go for our next Stream Team, which I’m hoping might be in December, but if its too cold then we’ll just wait till spring.

Bake Sale this Year? & Next meeting date 11.21.09
Hi All,
Sorry for the two emails in one week, but since it has been a while we do have multiple things to catch up on. So, in addition to the Stream Team outing this Saturday (1pm my house, please let me know), our next meeting is scheduled for the weekend of
Meeting: 11/21 @ Kaldi’s Coffee House on Hanley. 11am. Mark your calendars!
Before we have this meeting though, we need to decide if we are going to have another bake sale this year. If we are, I will need to know this week so I can call Straubs and reserve the outside space for the Sunday of Thanksgiving Break. Please let me know via email this week! I know many people will be out of town, but I have heard from many that another bake sale would be nice!

Stream Team this weekend. 11/7/09
Hi Everyone!
I know it’s been awhile, but if you check the blog it is being updated fairly regularly which is awesome! Our second stream team excursion is scheduled for this Saturday around 1pm. First we’ll meet at my house and then from there we can carpool down to Deer Creek. Please let me know if you can make it, maybe we can even go out to eat after! Information from Greenpeace: SLINGSHOT Opportunity- 10/12/09
Hi Everyone,
I was contacted by GreenPeace last week and they asked me to attend The Missouri Powershift Conference which deals with cleaning up the environment and learning about Global Warming. While, I know most of us are pretty well versed in this subject, this seems like a really awesome event from which to learn more. So, I was thinking that we, as Slingshot, can go as a group. Here’s some information about the opportunity I mentioned for you to get involved in the fight to save the planet: The Missouri Powershift Conference.
Powershift is a national youth movement to stop global warming through political advocacy and education
This year’s summit will focus on building the clean energy economy and demanding action from our leaders. There will be speakers and workshops on clean energy and how to be a more effective advocate. You’ll be able to connect with other students and hear great live music. There will also be a GREEN JOB FAIR. The conference is actually next weekend, October 16-18 at St. Louis University.
- Doors open Friday at 5:00 Saturday 9:00-5:00 Sun 9:00-12:00
- If you register now you get the whole weekend for $5 (pay when you get there – just tell them at the door you’re registered)

I’m very sorry. I forgot to send out an update email from the meeting last week.
Updates:
We are going to be cleaning at Deer Creek off of Hanley this Saturday, Oct 3 @ 1pm
You will need golashes, rain boots and gloves. also if you need directions, just call me.
After we’ll go out and eat something! But this is the official beginning of SLINGSHOT’s service project for this year and the more people involved the more effective we can bed. Also submissions. We haven’t gotten any in a while and the Blog has been largely silent. Please send us stuff. This is supposed to be a forum for us to put ourselves out there in the world. We take pretty much anything and everything, just send it our way.

We had three people attend our first SLINGSHOT meeting of the year, the kick-off meeting for the art fair, which was smaller than expected, but the stimulating conversations definitely made up for it. so please mark your calendars. We will be attending to our first order of business, our service project for this year, Stream Team. We will be setting dates for outings, picking streams to clean and talking about other ways for community involvement and how to spread the word. So please, do not miss! After that our next thoughts have been to do a SLINGSHOT art show. This was proposed last year and everyone really liked the idea, so if we can get more people at the meeting, maybe we can brainstorm ways to make that happen!
Lastly, submissions. Our college page is doing well. We regularly get the most hits on it, so it is proving to be a good idea! We have a total of 8 schools up and I would love to get more. Music reviews are also something I know a lot of people can pretty easily throw together, so please lets just stay on top of keeping SLINGSHOT a community forum!

Hello!- 8/30/09
In the next few weeks Elena and I decided to have a few meetings, just ti get everything jump started and people getting reconnected and involved with SLINGSHOT again! So with that being said our next two meetings are:
Saturday September 12, about 3pm-ish. On this day the St. Louis Art Fair is going on in my neighborhood, so we will be going through it as our meeting and just get everyone back together again as the SLINGSHOT community. Meet at my house. I’ll send out more info as I hear from who can come and who can’t.
and our 2nd meeting, as in an actual Sit-Down discuss SLINGSHOT and our goals for this year will be the following weekend on Sunday. So that is
Sunday, September 20, 10am. For now the location is open. The options are Companions, Northwest Coffee, Kaldi’s, Kayak’s, or my house. I am open to suggestions.

Good Afternoon Everyone- 8/28/09
Elena and I will be having our first editors meeting of the year tomorrow and so far we have been thinking about how so solve some of the problems we had last year. With the economy balancing precariously, it might be better if we move our focus from fund-raising to something we have more control over such as volunteering in our community. And since Slingshot is first and foremost a literary and art forum, what better place to preserve than nature which is a universal source of inspiration?
Currently, I have been looking into the Missouri Stream Team Organization which, if we adopt a stream, will provide us with everything we need if we can just get out to the streams and clean them! Since MO Stream Team is a state-wide program, we would have opportunities to go all around the state cleaning and preserving our surrounding ecosystems. Also is the spring there is water testing, and since everywhere people getting more and more aware of our environment, what better way to increase our own knowledge and directly impact the community we live in?
So, I have put my request through for a SLINGSHOT group, which MO Stream Team is currently processing and my hope is that once, maybe twice a month, some groups of us can get together on the weekend for a few hours and clean streams in the area. Also some other programs we are looking into involve planting trees in the St. Louis area.
But, keeping all of this in mind, we haven’t yet abandoned the book drive idea, even though from a practical perspective it is proving very difficult to figure out.
As always, if any of you have any poems, short stories, pictures, or art work you would like published just send it Elena’s of my way and I look forward to hearing from all you and for all of us working together to bring so much good into our community!

SLINGSHOT 09-10 – 8/14/09
and We’re back. 
I know I was supposed to keep the momentum going throughout the summer, but with everyone’s schedules and summer craziness, things just got a little too hard to handle, so it just became break time. Although, I did put a summertime post up and those pictures from the 4th of July night in St. Louis were pretty crazy.
So plans…
Well, Elena and I have been planning, and ideally we were thinking about doing a book drive, starting in our schools and extending through all our social networks. But, of course reality comes with its limits and we had to think what we were going to do them. And we have three option. One, sell them to make money and then donate the money to a charity. Two, find a charity that builds schools or shelters and donate them. Three, donate them to local schools and shelters in our own community that are under privileged and need books. But with these plans the main three problems are; finding a venue to hold a book sale, finding the money to ship the books, getting books that would be helpful to children who need them instead of just donating random cookbooks that no one wants anymore.
Since we are all very resourceful and bright, I am counting on all of us at our first meeting of the year to debate our idea and try and figure out solutions as well as weighing the pros and cons.
Secoondly, our next big plan is to have many bake sales. In our solo effort last fall we made almost $300 which we donated to MSF. And at the end of last year we were throwing around the idea of raising $10,000 to build a school. So at a low rate of $300 (mind you it was raining and thanksgiving weekend), it would only take 30 bake sales to accomplish and over a nine month period with like 2 bake sales a month, we could actually get pretty close. 
Thirdly, an issue I would like us focus more on this year. Community work and promoting our own art. While we have our blog with art work and literary efforts from all around, I was thinking maybe something more public, like perhaps and Art show in the loop?
These are all big ideas to ponder so have no doubt that we back in action! I will be sending out an email with our first meeting date soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

SLINGSHOT & SHAKESPEARE @ the Park – 5/28/09
Hello Everyone!
I would like to remind you all that we are planning the SLINGSHOT picnic for the Shakespeare festival for THIS Saturday, May 30. So far, I think I have 4 people confirmed. But remember that there will be a picnic so we will have food! Also if you would like to bring something to eat, that would be great too.
Well summer is officially here for most of us now! And, I know that means that a lot of people are going to be out of town and probably not checking their emails, or at least not their school emails, so if you have another address you would like me to forward the emails to, just let me know.
Because I know people won’t be checking their emails, I’m going to put all our upcoming events here and then when the dates get closer I’ll send out reminder emails, so the 2009 Summer for SLINGSHOT looks like this:
Sunday June 7, Swimming, Sushi, & SLINGSHOT Party. Kick off summer and bring everyone together to talk about long term goals.
Saturday July 25, SLINGSHOT @ the Botanical Gardens– maybe volunteering.
August 6-9 Possibly a Chicago Trip with volunteering in the Chicago Community

The Good & The Bad – 5/11/09
Hello Everyone!
I apologize for waiting so long to send another update. We have some good and bad news. As I’m sure many of you guessed, we won;t be able to have an art show. MICDS needed the space at this time to showcase the students’ work since it is the award time of the year, so Elena and I are doing our research to try and pick another setting, since we both think it is a really good idea!
So for the time the events on our calendar are;
Next Meeting, Sunday May 17, 1 week from today. 11am at Northwest Coffee in Clayton, maybe we’ll change the location to the park and have a picnic breakfast, but that depends on the weather, but either way that is NEXT sunday!! Please come!!
Event: SLINGSHOT @ the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival. Picnic style at Forest Park on Saturday May 30, 6pm. I will make a facebook group.
and Elena and I were thinking about having an impromptu bake sale just so that we can get some fund raising for Charity: Water going.
Please let me know what you can and cannot make, and I will try to keep everyone updated!

ART SHOW for SLINGSHOT – 4/13/09
Hi Everyone! I know that even though we haven’t met in so long, that does not mean that things are any less busy because even I am scrounging around for spare time. But I would love to have a meeting soon so we can all touch base and get back on track for the Charity Art Show which we are still planning on having but now it is in May. Elena and I are looking for pieces of art (photos, paintings, sculptures, etc.) which you guys would like to have shown in our art exhibition, and I have even been thinking about extending it to a music performance, but I will have to figure out logistics for that.
The tentative date for the Art show, if Elena and I can smoothly work things out with Mr. Nelson, is May 16 & !7.
I have also contacted Charity: Water, our nonprofit organization, and we might even get a representative to come down and talk to us!
So even though times are crazy right now, Slingshot is trucking along!!! And please submit any pictures and commentary from your college trips. I put up some of the schools I liked, and Elena is going to put up hers. If you want your name published tell us, and if you don’t tell us. Anything goes, well anything nice goes!!
So please mark your calendars, let me know what is new with all of you, and I hope that we can work out a meeting date before the Art Show!

Post Spring Break Catch- Up – 3/30/09
Hello!
I hope everyones spring break went well! I know that right now is one of the busiest times of the year with all the tests juniors have to take and finishing up the year strong. Elena and I are still planning on having a charity art show as our Spring Fund Raiser to raise money for Charity:Water. Right now we are trying to get Messing Gallery at MICDS available for this event. So, if you have any art work of photography you would like to show, please just contact either Elena or myself.
Other than that, if you have any college pictures from Spring Break, we are looking to Expand our College Portfolio page. I saw 14 schools, so hopefully I will add quite a few and I know Elena went and saw some schools to, so it seems like we have a good starting point.
And in addition to all of that, if you have any literature or art, music reviews, or ideas for improvement that you would like for us to publish of add, please just email me!!

Slow & Steady wins the race – 3/14/09
Hi Everyone,
For many of you, the lucky ones, Spring Break is here! And I know that a lot of us juniors will be taking college trips over spring break, so I wanted to encourage, those of you going on them, to take pictures and take part in our college portfolio. The College Portfolio is semi-started on the website, and the purpose of The College Portfolio is for all of us to pool our knowledge, pictures, and experiences, so that we can draw from each other.
So for those of you interested, all we need are some pictures and a little paragraph with your opinion of the school, and then we will upload the pictures and paragraph together under the name of that school. There are 2 schools up already, if you would like to see!
Secondly, is that our music page has really taken a HUGE jump!! We have about 10 reviews up!

Movie Night Recap – 2/26/09
Hello,
Thank you everyone who came! Even though Hotel Rwanda is a hard movie to get through, we all got through it Thoroughly moved and ready to work for SLINGSHOT!
Spring Charity Event Ideas:
1. Art Gallery in Messing Gallery at MICDS on a weekend in April to raise money for Charity: Water. One of our members, Sana Habib, hosted an Art show in Messing Gallery for Pennies for Peace last year and it was very successful, so we have some experience, and we have a lot of artists and this idea fits with out mission so perfectly!
Promoting the Arts and Promoting World Peace!

Next Meeting is Saturday April 11, Elena and I will be meeting on and off before then, so we can hopefully pull together the gallery for the subsequent weekend. No location has been set, but this time our meeting is going to be on Saturday!! at 1pm so please come
Also we need to schedule our SLINGSHOT day at the Missouri Botanical Garden. This will pretty much just be a day for all of us to get together and enjoy everyones company and meet new people. It will also be hopefully in April. More info on that in the April 11 meeting.

Wow! Hello! Happy New Year!
I don’t think that I have sent out an email since the bake sale (in November), so, for those of you who do not visit our website regularly, we made 180.30$. I was hoping for more, but all in all not bad, especially since the weather was atrocious and cold, very cold. But we stuck through it! Thank all of you who contributed it was so much fun and don’t worry, I’m full with plenty more ideas! not that we wouldn’t like to yours, we would! Please share!
Anyhow back to business. Over the last few months, people have been expressing concern about our name, thinking of SLINGSHOT as a violent action when all we originally meant it for was an attention grabber. If you have any ideas, again send them my way, but I am not promising anything.
Secondly, people have been getting more and more confused about what exactly the point of SLINGSHOT is. Well, Slingshot is a group of teen literary, artists and activist who are trying to gain knowledge and perspective, while using the power of their number to affect change in this world. We do have a mission statement on the website.
Thirdly, over break I was researching philanthropy groups and started thinking that maybe we should change our group. Doctors Without Borders is an amazing organization that helps so many people everywhere, but how much can our little bit of money help them. Honestly, they might be able to buy a couple measles vaccines, but not much more. My point being however that I found another organization. It is called Charity: Water and is based in New York, but for every 20$ they receive they build a well in Africa. So a 100$ contribution can give a family of 5 enough water to live on for the next few years.

7 DAYS TILL BAKE SALE! – 11/23/08

So not much happened at the meeting this morning, since not many people showed up but that is okay as long as people come and bring stuff to the Bake Sale THIS sunday, Nov 30 @ the Straubs in Clayton. The bake sale will be starting at 12pm and going 5pm and no one is obligated to stay for the entire time.

Hey all! This is Anjuli and Elena here.
We want to have a meeting next Sunday at 11:00 AM. We’re doing pretty well here…so far we have:
1. An Action Kit from MSF
2. A checking account for Slingshot…so we can order shirts and write checks. This means that we can begin accepting donations to MSF!
3. Plan for the Bake Sale, the 30th of November at Straubs in Clayton from 12:00 to 5:00. Come out and support Slingshot! If you want to bake, BAKE YOUR HEART OUT!!!!!!! Bring baked goods to Straubs by 11:00.
The agenda for the next meeting:
1. Plan for the next Bake Sale, preferably soon…before exams and the holiday season.
2. Show everyone the Action Kit and the checking account.
3. Discuss submissions. WE NEED MORE SUBMISSIONS.
4. Discuss logo and slogan.
5. Share ideas for t-shirt design. Take orders for t-shirts!

Good Morning & Priorities – 10/23/08
our list of priorities as of right now is
a) a symbol. we cannot use the peace sign in the eye, as cool as it is, because it is not ours. So Elena and I, mostly Elena, have been brainstorming symbols and we pretty much have no clue. The symbol does not need to be directly related to SLINGSHOT, but that would be nice. So all the artists out there please!!!! Help us! i’ll attach my terrible design and please keep in mind that i am no artist, lol.
b) we’re thinking it is about time we get on this whole fund-raising portion for MSF, Doctors Without Borders, so i was thinking a bake sale over Thanksgiving break. I know that a lot of people will be gone or unavailable, but i think that it is still worth a shot. So far Whole Foods has absolutely rejected us on our endeavor, so i am still trying to find a place.

c) t-shirts but for those we’ll need a symbol and design, but we are so definitely getting them. also i have a general flyer that i am going to attach and all of you at other schools, please spread the words and the flyers, this should be an entire community thing not just the friends of Anjuli and Elena.

SLINGSHOT RETURNS FROM SUMMER 08′ BIGGER AND BADDER THAN EVER!! – 9/21/08
Hey Guys!!!
As you might have guessed, the magazine is starting up again. The summer is over and with us at least pretty well transitioned into school, myself included, Elena and I have decided to get the ball rolling, again. We are hopefully meeting this morning to talk about alternate forms of publication and perhaps some fund raising ideas. I will try and attach most of my documents so that you can all know what is going on, (my computer is being very obstinate, so like i said, i’ll try)
Um the best recap/ refreasher i can give is that:

SLINGSHOT is our title
Our major groups for the magazine are: 1. literary, 2. art, 3. music, 4. global awareness (and nothing political just try to raise awareness levels) and 5. Advertisements (mainly for NFP’s)

Currently Looking into a Web forum vs. old fashion publishing, and yes that is killing me too, we just can’t afford the real deal right now.
If still interested please reply and say that, and fyi, being apart of this magazine is not going to take anywhere from 5 to 10 hours a week. I am hoping that at any given time there will be at least three other people on board with layout, editing, and publicizing so that at least Elena and I aren’t alone. but i promise that this is no big time commitment. just random meetings every now and then! and submissions for whatever you want published.
First Meeting projection: Sunday, October 5. Northwest Coffee, Clayton Missouri. @ 2pm (time is movable so just let me know!)

Summer Break for Slingshot – 6/13/08
Hi Everyone,
I hope all of your summers are going splendid.
#1: I have attached a copy of the rough draft letter which will be sent to all of the big name companies in our area. I am sending it out so you guys can edit and add and make changes wherever you like. These letters need to be the best they can be so all the help i can get from you guys would be amazing.
#2: I have heard requests for another meeting? I was hesitant to have them over the summer because so many people would be gone, but seeing as how less people are gone than i thought, another meeting could be good. Let me know how you feel about that?
#3: if you guys have any ideas or any progress just let me know. I am going to start going around to every bread co. and starbucks i can think of to put of promotional cards with all the submission informations. oh, and if you guys want to submit anything, the address is:

#4: also any more cover ideas would be great, we have the peace sign in the eye, but thats all, and i think we should just have more that way we have a variety to choose from. Shannon, can you think of anything?

Brainstorm Companies to send letters asking fo funding: i went to my cousins house yesterday and apparently he is involved with a major NFP org in STL, who knew. and so he was quizzing me and trying to help me create an arguement as to why we should get funding. his questions were:
- why SLINGSHOT?
- Why not just give the funding directly to the NFP organization which we will be donating our profits to?
- why are we doing this? is it just to get into college? what is personal about this?
- what experience prior do we have so that they can rest assures that their investment in our NFP Magazine is sturdy and they won’t loose money?
- what is your mission statement?
Please if you can brainstorm some answers and email me back. I’ve already started on mine, but we are going to need the strongest arguement possible if we are going to get what we need. According to my cousin what we are trying to do is nothing new, what edge do we have? can anyone else come? :) this is exciting.

We Have a Title! – 5/16/08
Good Morning!!
We have officially chosen a title. I know that a lot of people are opposed to Slingshot because it could have violent connotation, but Elena and I feel that as long as we address and make evident the fact that we do not mean it violently, everything should be cool.
Also for the Meeting on Monday May 26 @ 5:30 at my house, i only have two confirmations. Please let me know if you can come and please come if you can!!!

Also I’ve been getting a lot of negative feedback on the Title “Slingshot” and I’m feeling like a lot of people would be needing an explanation that in no way do we mean it violently, just in an activist kind of way. but anyway i started working on the Peace title
in the attached document, i’ve found 27 translations for peace in different languages and been working on a title which can be different and expressive but still maintain a theme which people would be able to relate to on a regular basis. magazines are supposed to create a familiar base with its reader, so there are just some brainstorms in there. I know this week is hectic with exams next wee and everything. please respond at your leisure. let me know if you can make the first meeting!! and i hope to hear from you soon

The Birth of Slingshot on May 5, 2008.
Hey!!!
So of course I have a new idea! I always have a new idea, but this time,
it actually within my reach!! I was thinking that we as teenagers should
start a St. Louis based Literary magazine! My mom works for River Styx,
which is St. Louis’ most esteemed professional Lit publication so i have
access and knowledge on how to actually do this!
Why: Yes, we are young but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have voices. We
do! and we also have the power to strengthen them by exercising them! and
that is the plan for this magazine. it will hopefully be a thoughtful
forum wherein young adults can feel free and safe to express themselves
however they so chose.
breakdown: In my preliminary planning stages the most important sections
needed are:
a. travel
b. art
c. movies/ reviews
d. music/ reviews
e. books/ short stories/ novellas/ reviews
f. Author/ Poet/ Artist of the Month
g. Photography– LOTS AND LOTS OF PICTURES! and Layouts and stuff
h. crossword puzzles/ sudoku/ word search
these of course are just ideas and thoughts
projected time commitment: twice a month at my house/ mom’s office
we’ll work it out

spread the word. I’m going to try to get flyers up at Clayton, Ladue,
Burroughs, Priory, Viz, and Villa, we will need some journalists and i
